Land of Christian Martyrs

Under the reign of the Christian daimyo Leo Gamo Ujisato,

Inawashiro became home to many devout believers,

including the castle warden Oka Echigo.

However, persecution began in Genna 8 (1622).

In Kan’ei 1 (1624), by order of Shogun Iemitsu,

all believers who refused to renounce their faith were executed,

and their remains were buried at this site.
